They were exactly as expected. I'd have given them 5 stars except measuring cups just aren't that exciting ;^j
(Think fiberoptics and bankruptcy, etc). Corning has licensed the name of 'Pyrex' to World Kitchen, but nothing else about it is 'corning glass'. It's also heavier because it's NOT PYREX anymore. It is NOT Pyrex BOROSILICATE glass anymore (after 1998).
NOW, World Kitchen makes their 'pyrex' measuring cups out of ordinary soda-lime glass (kitchen drinking glass type). (Think wear safety goggles - like you WERE working in a CHEM LAB). It is NOT the original invention from 1915 that we all remember. They sold off their 'household' glassmaking and it reformed as World Kitchen. (As an aside - Corning made/makes great glass - of all kinds.
Do check out their lovely glass museum in Corning, NY). After 1998, when Corning Glass stopped making Pyrex. PYREX is borosilicate glass and very resistant to wear and chip and cracking due to exposure to heat or quick changes in temperature. If you want my opinion - find 'vintage' Pyrex Measuring Cups somehow and they will last multiple lifetimes.
Pyrex is only a trade name ONLY now, licensed out to World Kitchen. A world-beater in their day. Management screwed them over going down the wrong economic road. This is NOT safe to expose to heat changes. (Timex was to watches as these were to chemlabware. I have one of my mom's and she has two of her mom's measures. It is NOT safe to plunge into ice cold water from boiling oven anymore.
My new ones cannot hold a candle to the old ones (30 to 60 years old) and aren't worth a tinker's damn. This is why Pyrex and Kimax and other borosilicate glasses are used for chemistry glassware. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'). I suspect that soda-lime glass is denser than borosilicate, but the actual measure wall thickness may be different now than before, and, thus, this accounts for some of the weight difference. Happy times in the kitchen.
having these makes my kitchen time SO much easier. non-porous equals extremely easy to clean, even with greasy stuff. now that i'm used to having them i can't imagine just having one plastic one like i used to. the variety of different sizes is fantastic. the bigger one is nice for mixing dry ingredients and adding to other things. i also prefer the blue writing to the red.
This is a great set. The best part is that they will nest inside each other for easy storage. I was hesitant about getting them, thinking I would have to store each one separately since they are glass and with handles. But, they fit nicely inside each other with the handles hanging over the edge.Great buy.
They're heavy, but they're safe for boiling liquids, ice cold food and everything in between. Here's a really important piece of food prep equipment. I spend a lot of time winging it when I cook, but when I do have to measure my ingredients, I love these clear Pyrex cups in three tremendously useful sizes. Pyrex is crystal clear and cleans up beautifully. You can't ask for more.
